Recruiters- please stop saying it’s career suicide to consider counteroffers. That was valid in the 80’s and 90’s but left town with the DeLorean. There is a modern day approach to considering counteroffers that will maintain an ethical position with both the current employer and the prospective employer. Ethically, once an individual has accepted a position then there should be no threat of counteroffer. We haven’t spoken to a person yet that thought it would be OK for a company to withdraw an offer three days before a start date and after the individual has given their notice. Yet some individuals do find it appropriate to decline a role after accepting and often days before a scheduled start. It is acceptable to speak with your current employer if you think that’s in your best interest. It simply needs to be done at the right time and in the right way.
The employment climate has shifted dramatically in the last 15 years. Individuals needs to be educated on the modern day fundamentals of career management. Exploring your value in the market and considering counteroffers (remaining with your current employer/client) are a big part of that.
